Sir: I write in support of Angela Lambert's plea for a merciful release for old people who ask for euthanasia. Of course, there are arguments on both sides: undoubtedly, were euthanasia legal, some old people might be pressurised into seeking it against their real inclinations.
Why should this consideration weigh so decidedly against the ever-increasing number of old people today, who are kept alive in discomfort, indignity, and often pain and despair? How many of us will one day echo my poor helpless husband's words before he died of cancer, 'I wish I could commit suicide'?
Yours faithfully,
