Letter: Australia's time for a republic

Sir: I think that it is likely that Australia will become a republic, with a new flag, by the centenary of its federation in 2001.

At the moment, I am of the opinion that a referendum seeking to change the constitution would be lost; but during another eight years a lot of 'oldies' will pass away, and a lot of new people will arrive from all over the world.

Some people are busy designing new flags. I saw one, in a local paper the other day. It was black, green and gold with a Southern Cross on the black bit.

There is a lot to be said for a 'head of state' who is not elected; it makes for continuity of government practices and provides centuries of history and wisdom to guide politicians.

I was born in England, but have now lived in Australia longer than anywhere else. My wife was born in Australia. Neither of us is in any hurry for any change to be made.
