Sir: All those who know Stephen Tumim at the bar or otherwise will be saddened that his appointment as HM Inspector of Prisons is to be terminated after such a distinguished term of office (report, 27 May).

Henceforth, however, others will benefit, when Judge Tumim reassumes sitting in the county courts, by his wise and compassionate judgement.
