Sir: Your leading article 'Be a giver, and be thankful' (11 May) raises the relevance of the Basic, or Citizens' Income. The agonising dilemma of whether to give to a beggar who appears certain to spend it on more alcohol is removed if you know he has received sufficient to cover his basic needs - including accommodation - each week. Please do not confuse the need for donors to feel good with the wider issue of how to achieve real equity within society.
Yours faithfully,
CLIVE LORD
