Sir: Call me unpatriotic if you will, but I think that "Flower of Scotland" is a dismal dirge, growled mainly in a lower register which does little to raise morale ("An anthem for our times", 30 May). I must point out that while it seems to have helped us against the Welsh, the Irish and the French, none of them much involved in the Battle of Bannockburn, it has seldom done so against the English.
