Sir: A well-designed garden is beautiful and appropriate for the setting and the client. Such a garden seems to be the obvious and inevitable use of the available space. I don't imagine that when James Fenton visits one ('A cottage garden with buffalo and old tyres', 23 May) it occurs to him to wonder about the designer. He simply enjoys being there.
What a pity that the quality of contemporary garden design is judged by the most noticeable examples, which look 'designed'.
Yours faithfully,
