Letter: Bill Clinton's inauguration

Sir: I was surprised that President Clinton referred to the United States as the 'world's oldest democracy' in his inaugural speech ('Era of deadlock and drift is over', 21 January).

The only way he might be able to justify this claim is if 'democracy' is defined as 'votes for white males', which doesn't sound very politically correct to me]

Yours sincerely,

RICHARD EMMERSON
