Sir: In today's Independent I read that the pressure is off John Birt for his super-efficient tax arrangements (page 1); that 'Freemason links' threaten the privatisation of the Property Services Agency (page 6); and that a report into the 'poorly managed' Wessex Regional Health Authority ventures into computing attempted to conceal the involvement of government ministers (page 2).

When taken with previous institutional inability to accept responsiblility, do you think we could ask the Italians if we could borrow one of their incorruptible investigating magistrates?
