Letter: Black conscience

Sir: Today, as the black people in South Africa go to vote for the first time, I have a feeling of joy. For a moment the world feels human again, it feels good. At the same time I also have a deep feeling of shame and guilt . . . for being white, the cause of so many years of cruelty and inhumanity.
