Sir: There was no "feverish round of bidding" between newspapers for Oleg Gordievsky's memoirs, as your report "The sorry tale of Agent Boot" (23 February) states. His agent offered the book solely to the Sunday Times.
And much as I am flattered, as the person who buys serialisations for the paper, at being likened to Sir Galahad desperately in search of the Holy Grail that will push up circulation, the truth is that we are inundated with publishers offering us serials rights in their books and, as they will begrudgingly testify, we use our cheque book sparingly.
Yours sincerely,
TONY RENNELL
