FRANK KERMODE junks literary theory ('Of sound and fury, signifying nothing', Review, 18 April) apparently without realising that his argument about how we should approach Shakespeare constitutes a theory in itself. Critics who claim to be free from bias are as self-deluding as standard English-users who imagine themselves to be speaking without an accent.
