WE LEARN less about the Pope's performance from Fr McCaferty's eulogy ("God's vicar", Letters, 1 November) than from the fact that 700,000 more people attended mass in the UK when the Pope was elected than do now. Most of the remaining 1.75 million ignore his teaching on birth control.
Failure to use condoms increases sexually transmitted disease worldwide. In southern and central Africa Aids is threatening the very survival of communities.
Perhaps the Pope should be apologising for the consequences of his birth control policy, rather than the cruel Inquisition.
