WHY does Ian Jack ("It hurts when you say Doctor, Mawhinney", 14 April) suppose that medical practitioners, who hold, for the most part, only a Bachelor's degree, are "proper doctors", while Doctors of Philosophy and, presumably, Doctors of Divinity, Doctors of Science and Doctors of Civil Law are not "proper doctors"? Perhaps the boot is on the other foot.
