Letter: Brighten our summer

Sir: A visit to Tuscany, where the fireflies were firing away on all cylinders, prompts me to suggest that the pleasures of the English summer would be enhanced by the sight of fireflies here.

I have reason to believe that once imported, they could survive in our climate. They could be imported under the authority of the Department of the Environment.

I can imagine no more harmless activity for the present secretary of that department than to preside over the importation of fireflies, though in order to avoid suspicions of political influence, they should be allocated to different regions by the Arts Council.

Perhaps I might also appeal for a revival of glow-worms. I haven't seen one since my childhood.

Yours faithfully,
