Sir: David Shamash (Letters, 16 September) asks how it is that the European Union can simultaneously ban British beef exports on health grounds while permitting its consumption in this country.
The answer is very simple: the operation of that simple and wonderful concept "subsidiarity", which means the Government can opt out, saving British consumers from the predatory instincts of Brussels bureaucrats.
