HAVE YOU ever seen a sun-worshipper reading a hardback on the beach? 'Uncertain what to buy for the beach?' you ask (Sunday Review, 19 July), but proceed to list hardcovers for 19 of your 40 suggestions, that's not to mention Ted Hughes's Rain Charm, also available in paperback. Or Anita Brookner's A Closed Eye, which - you're right - is a paperback, but not published by Cape at pounds 13.99; but by Penguin at pounds 5.99.
So huge is Barry Unsworth's excellent Sacred Hunger that it would leave no room in the surf bag for tanning oil, shades, towel and other beach essentials.
