Sir: Andrew Marr (26 March) refers to the "wealthy farmers and landowners ... the heart and spine of local [Conservative] associations". In calling for compensation for any slaughtered herds, are these the same Conservatives who felt the only solution for British industries whose markets had disappeared was to let the free market handle their demise? Their phrase, "The world does not owe us a living" needs to be changed to "The world does not owe you a living".
