Letter: BSE: Europe should share the burden of compensation

Sir: If there is to be any compensation for beef farmers, can it not come from a windfall levy on lamb, pork and poultry producers, who are doing very nicely out of the BSE scare? The taxpayer, who has done nothing wrong, need not be involved. Or is it the usual farming story - when prices fall, shout for a hand-out; when prices rise, don't say a word?
