Letter: Bull bars are no use in cities

OPPOSITE Christian Wolmar's excellent expose on the trend for bull bars (' 'Killer' car fad that costs lives', 29 May) was a full-page advertisement for the Land-Rover Discovery telling us: 'We've also fitted twin crush-cans to the front of the car, to absorb shock-waves before they reach the chassis. Apart from absorbing much of the impact of a front-on accident, minor shunts will cause less damage and result in cheaper repair bills.'

Such progress in the design of safety features is to be applauded yet all these benefits will be lost if bull bars are fitted. Bull bars can cause serious injury especially to children, motorcyclists and cyclists. They serve no useful purpose on the street and hopefully the fashion will fade fast.
