Sir: I am a single parent from the "not so deserving" category outlined by Lynne Reid Banks (letter, 27 November). Thankfully I am in work, and supporting myself and my son.

Unemployment is unfortunately a possibility for us all. Does Lynne Reid Banks object to her taxes supporting more traditional families when unemployed?

I am more than happy for my taxes to go on supporting women or men struggling to bring up their families.
