Letter: Cartesian comfort

Sir: As one who has been unemployed for four years and ineligible to claim unemployment benefit (correction, Job Seekers' Allowance) after expiry of the first year (now reduced to six months), I find it less than heartening to be excluded from the unemployment statistics ("Good news on jobs conceals a painful truth", 17 October). In some quarters I cease to exist. Never mind - I will continue to rely on Descartes' Cogito ergo sum ("I think, therefore I am").
