Sir: Your writer Andrew Marr (24 August) is right to call me a 'castle creeper', though 'castle-strider' might be more apt. There are more than 3,000 castles in Britain (most of them ruinous, alas) and I visited a high proportion of them when preparing my survey The National Trust Book of British Castles. For those of your readers who wish to see the results of my castle creeping, it is now reissued in a revised format as Castles of England, Scotland and Wales (Weidenfeld, pounds 12.95 hardback, pounds 7.99 paperback).
Yours faithfully,
PAUL JOHNSON
