Sir: Like Andrew McCloy (letter, 14 June), I also find sticky labels on fresh fruit extremely irritating. I believe this is done by supermarkets to avoid training checkout operators to tell the difference between a Golden Delicious and a Granny Smith (try removing the label before the checkout and watch the ensuing confusion).

The French system, where you weigh and price the produce yourself, would appear to be a preferable alternative. Alas, I suspect it is only a matter of time before we have bar-coded fruit.
