Sir: The Diary (13 October) makes note of the apparent deviousness (but incompetence) of importers in flagging their goods 'British made'.

A Californian friend tells me bitterly that a place in Japan was formally renamed USA, for the purpose of stamping 'Made in . . . ' on exports destined for the United States. Can this be true?

Yours faithfully,

TIM LINCOLN
