Sir: In support of the Rev Peter Hatton (letters, 13, 19 November), I note from my Concordance that, whilst there are no less than 20 references to beards in the Old Testament, there are none whatsoever in the New Testament.

Perhaps, as a mark of celebration of 2000 years of Christianity, our bewhiskered political and religious leaders could undertake a sponsored shave-in?
