Letter: D-Day: forget the PR, remember those who died

Sir: I have the impression that to most of the post-war generation Germans of my age group, D-Day means little more than the events which led to the making of that exciting war movie The Longest Day. Some long-ago battle in which the 'Nazis' were defeated, not 'us'.

No matter what Chancellor Kohl's feelings are, most people I know don't connect D-Day with anything we have today. On the other hand, you won't find any misgivings because of the 'defeat', either.

Myself - I decorated my windows with little British and American flags today. I feel very indebted to the brave men of the Allied expeditionary forces that landed in France 50 years ago. I will never forget what I owe to their courage and sacrifice.
