Sir: Monica Furlong's review of the Pope's new book ('What gets up the Pope's nose', 22 October) attributes to Voltaire one of several things he is said to have said but didn't say: 'Dieu me pardonnera, c'est son metier.' It was actually said by Heinrich Heine, and something similar is also said to have been said by the Empress Catherine of Russia.
