Sir: Elizabeth Pidsley (letter, 15 July) asks why we need women in the armed forces. One could say that in every generation there is a minority of women who want to dress and behave like men and there is a number of men who would like to wear women's clothes and make-up and live a feminine life as domestic maids and shop assistants, for example.
Our society panders to the former and persecutes the latter. This is called equal opportunities and it is puzzling.
Yours faithfully,
