Letter: Eltham insulted

I TAKE exception to Blake Morrison's inclusion of Eltham in his list of all things tacky ("Thick-headed John Bulls made for the constable's bludgeon", Culture, 14 March). Eltham is a pleasant suburb with a solid community and at least three buildings of historic interest: the 11th- century Eltham Palace, used by Prince John; the Tudor Barn, home of Sir Thomas More's daughter; and the Bob Hope Theatre, named for one of the town's most illustrious sons. It is tragic that Eltham's name has been sullied by the murder of Stephen Lawrence. It is an insult to the town's population - most of whom are decent, law-abiding and non-racist - to label the town "tacky".
