Sir: It is certainly a record and something to be commended that Labour's new Shadow Cabinet is to contain five women, but there is another record that should not be ignored. Chris Smith is the first 'out' gay politician to attain Cabinet status. This, bearing in mind he is the only out gay MP, seems to be a significant endorsement of gay politics from the PLP. Long may it continue.
