Sir: Paddy Ashdown has long called for a modernisation of our democracy. At their conferences this autumn both Tony Blair and John Major have supported this theme.

How soon can we expect to see the Commons abandoning adversarial politics, sitting in a semicircle, and voting by pressing buttons?
