Sir: Your reporter Patrick Cockburn, in his article on President Clinton's alleged continual adultery (21 December), mentions that the allegations occur in the American Spectator. This paper, he informs your readers, is 'extreme right wing'. May I suggest this term is silly. Whether 'right/left' means much is open to dispute. But the American Spectator is not 'extreme' right wing.
One day Mr Cockburn may meet some person or some party which is 'extreme right wing' and he will have no language left to describe it. Your publication of his words tells us more about the allegedly independent Independent's biases than those of the American Spectator.
Yours faithfully
