Sir: Lord Monsoon does us a favour (letter, 17 July) by drawing our attention to the slaughter of birds for entertainment. No doubt there would be greater public outrage if this "sport" were more visible, not pursued on private estates and moors closed to the public in season.
This would be a good moment for that highly respectable organisation, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, to explain why it retains section 4(f) in its charter, which states that it must "take no part in the question of the killing of game birds", a policy which must give great comfort to the shooting fraternity.
