Sir: Your manifesto correctly highlights the fact that the construction industry is one of the most depressed sectors of the economy. Every day increasing numbers of people present themselves to this council in desperate need of rented housing. Yet despite the fact that we have pounds 12m in reserves from the sale of council houses, this government will not allow us to use that money to build the new homes those people so urgently need.

Yours faithfully,

PAUL JENKS

Councillor (Lab)

Chair of Housing

Southampton City Council
