Sir: Recent ministerial broadsides against fathers who desert their children prompt an immediate retort: why does the Children Act 1989 deprive unmarried fathers of the concept of parental responsibility at law? This glaring omission encourages a Jack the Lad culture, in which men procreate without obligations. If every child deserves the love and support of its father, why can't the Government remove blatant statutory barriers to this effect?
Yours faithfully,
