Sir: I deplore the arrogance of Stephen Hopkins (Letters, 31 July). He says that the inability of public inquiries, general elections, and so on, to listen effectively to the deep and growing unease that many feel about the daily rape and pillage of the Earth can lead to direct action. He is one of the very fortunate minority who live in a real, functioning democracy, however imperfect it may be. If he and his kind can even contemplate its overthrow, however justified their concerns, then there is no hope.
Yours faithfully,
D. S. HOSKINS
