Letter: Greenpeace and Brent Spar: a propaganda victory that raises more questions

Sir: Shortly before the last general election, while I was on the staff at Covent Garden, the singer Jill Gomez and I entertained the late Labour leader, John Smith, during an interval in the opera.

We argued that Labour would need to pay serious attention to environmental issues if it were to be elected. Mr Smith, however, was insistent that people's only concern was the pound in their pocket.

The Brent Spar affair has shown just how wrong he was.

Yours faithfully,

PATRICK CARNEGY
