Letter: Hello, cancer

THAT BREAST cancer might have a cause in environmental factors is a much-favoured surmise of many ecologically minded people and the possible link with artificial light ("Artificial light `may cause breast cancer'", 1 August) is but one of many factors. Another environmental factor rarely covered by the press is the bra. It doesn't need an oncologist to know that a major organ of detoxification - the lymph glands - is situated exactly where all the constraining parts of the bra impinge: under the armpits and in the rib intercostal spaces. We should not be surprised that our breast- and fashion-obsessed culture will not publicise anything that would detract from the proud breast shapes projected on to us by a lucrative industry.
