Sir: John Shepherd's article (7 December) on the latest fad in the drinks market is sound enough. But he may have left the impression that real ale is in decline. In fact, more real ale is sold now than in 1989. Over 100 new real ale breweries have opened in the past two years and despite recession, cross-border trade, the shift to drinking at home, and whatever wheeze the marketing people come up with, real ale is doing very nicely.
