Sir: Your article 'Poll will cast Salinas as hero or villain' (18 August), on Mexico's upcoming presidential election, is misleading from headline to finish. Your correspondent's argument that President Salinas will be a 'hero' if he hands power over to the opposition and a 'villain' if he doesn't overlooks one rather important element, the election results themselves.
Should the PRI candidate win the election, as every independent opinion poll has indicated he will, surely the heroic thing to do would be to respect the popular vote? Isn't that what democracy is about?
Yours sincerely,
