Letter: How to put a borough in order

Sir: The reaction of Tories from John Major to Dame Shirley Porter on the Magill report into Westminster's "homes for votes" scandal shows a massive difference between Labour and the Conservatives.

When Labour has a problem, it tackles it. Labour both nationally and locally has been unequivocal in condemning the poor practices and wrongdoings of the past in Lambeth. The Labour group on Lambeth council voted to set up the independent inquiry by Elizabeth Appleby QC and when she reported back, we entirely accepted her findings, as well as the separate recommendations made by the district auditor, and put into action a radical programme to turn the council around.

The Tories in Westminster and nationally should learn from Lambeth's experiences.

Leader, Lambeth Labour Group
