Sir: Mrs M. E. North (Letters; 'Patten wrong on right to silence', 12 October) might well have explained to her Dutch guest that if, as Sir Henry Wooten wrote, 'An ambassador is an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country', then it could be said that a minister of the Crown is a dishonest one kept to lie at home for the good of his party.
Yours faithfully,
