Sir: The events surrounding the court appearance of those accused of James Bulger's murder are extremely saddening. While most people will empathise with the outraged elements of the onlooking crowd, the most depressing feature is the continuation of aggression and violence. Although indirectly and perhaps in a subliminal way, pugnacious behaviour may well influence the boys in the police vans. Ten-year-olds remain impressionable.

Yours faithfully,

JONATHAN LYNCH
