Sir: It seems very likely that the Jews have been praying for the welfare of the Royal Family for many years. In the 'Humble Address' which Manasseh ben Israel, a Dutch rabbi, presented to Cromwell in 1655 for the readmission of the Jews to England, he mentioned as an example of the 'Fidelity' of the Jews 'the inviolable custome of all Jews wheresoever they live, for on every Sabbath or festivall Day, they every where are used to pray for the safety of all Kings, Princes and Common-wealths under whose jurisdiction they live . . .'

Yours faithfully,
