Sir: I was most surprised to read your article 'Britain 'knew of Iraq arms route' ' (1 May). Fouad Ayoub, Jordan's ambassador to Britain, has not stated that 'he would be prepared to give evidence to Lord Justice Scott's inquiry into the arms-to-affair', nor has he 'claimed that vital parts for Iraqi tanks (which were supplied to Jordan) were passed on to Iraq'.
Your reporter is welcome to his interpretation of Mr Ayoub's remarks to the BBC on the subject of Jordanian arms sales to Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war, but he should not attribute his extrapolations to the Jordanian ambassador.
Yours faithfully,
NASSER JUDEH
