Sir: In her letter about the names of the Marx Brothers ('The Marxist evolution', 27 September) Jill Coles ascribes Chico's soubriquet to his fondness for chicks.

Is there any firm evidence for this? I ask because 'chico' is vernacular Italian for 'laddie', or 'boy-o'.
