Letter: Justice for those who can pay

STANDARD fees in magistrates' courts will mean cost-cutting by many solicitors. Important evidence may go unearthed, important witnesses unseen. More miscarriages of justice are inevitable.

The unprecedented changes in eligibility for civil legal aid mean that many people of modest means will be denied access to the courts to defend their basic human rights. This is a game with tragic consequences for those who believe that equal access to the law is a fundamental right in a democracy.
