Sir: It is very unfortunate that Christopher J. M. David (Letters, 16 June) is unaware of the official Opposition's view of the situation in Bosnia. We have not called for the withdrawal of British troops.

In fact Labour has asked for the re-deployment of the artillery that was available for the rapid reinforcement of our forces, but has now been withdrawn by the Defence Secretary. We have also demanded that the rules of engagement are changed to allow British troops to protect non-combatants, as well as themselves.

Finally we have frequently drawn attention to the fact that the Government's defence cuts have prevented the UK from properly supporting UN military operations, both in Bosnia and in the many other areas where UN forces are needed.

Yours sincerely,

DAVID CLARK
