Letter: Leonard Doyle's letter

I WAS pleased to read Leonard Doyle's article about the remarkable Pont de Normandie ('A bridge so far over the Seine', 5 December). He is incorrect, however, when he describes it as 'the longest suspension bridge in the world'. This title is currently held by the Mackinac Bridge, Michigan, which has an overall suspended length of 2,256 metres.

The Pont de Normandie is a cable-stayed bridge (not a suspension bridge) and as such will be the longest of its type. However, at 856 metres, its main span is a relative tiddler compared, say, with the 1,410 metre span of the Humber Suspension Bridge, which holds the world record.
