Letter: Life's too short for going to extremes

Sir: As a pupil at Sutton Valence, a coeducational public school in Kent, I would like to reply to Victoria Ward's article, 'Better to be an academic icon than head girl' (28 September).

One should not be a superhuman celebrity of many talents beyond limitations of time and energy, nor should one bury one's head too vigorously in a single occupation; we are merely humans with an average life-span of about 70 years against the rest of time. Please refrain from placing too much importance on the exhausting extremes of either study or social success.

Yours faithfully,

ELOISE R. DOOREY
